Fractional and NED
Fractional EV leadership for businesses that cannot wait for a permanent hire
Senior EV charging leadership by the day. I sit inside your business, own the outcomes, and hold the line between what sales promises and what delivery can actually do.
Is this you?
You are entering the UK charging market
You have a product that works elsewhere and no first-hand read on how UK buyers, installers and DNOs actually behave.
You are scaling faster than your operating model
Volume is growing, installs are slipping, and nobody owns the gap between sales promises and delivery reality.
Your board wants challenge, not consensus
You need someone who has run the operation, not someone reporting on it from a slide deck.
You are choosing or fixing a partner
A charging partner, installer network or reseller channel is central to the plan and the appraisal has never been done properly.
What I actually do
Own a number, not a workstream
I take a commercial or operational outcome and answer for it at exec level, the same way a permanent director would.
Board and investor credibility
Board packs, investor Q&A and diligence support from someone who has been on the operating side of the answers.
Build the team behind you
The point is not dependency. I hire, coach and hand over so the capability stays when the engagement ends.
Independent challenge
No conflicting board seats, no product to sell you. If the plan does not hold up, you hear it early.

What £73,200 a year actually buys you
| Hire my experience full time | Spend the same, hire full time | WattsUp, 2 days a week | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salary or fee | £130,000 | £50,000 | £73,200 |
| Car allowance | £6,000 | £6,000 | Not applicable |
| Employer NI at 15% | £20,400 | £8,400 | Not applicable |
| Employer pension at 5% | £6,500 | £2,500 | Not applicable |
| Recruitment fee, 20% over 2 years | £13,000 | £5,000 | Not applicable |
| Equipment, software and training | £1,650 | £1,300 | Not applicable |
| Total cost to you | £177,550 | £73,200 | £73,200 |
| Cost per working hour | £97 | £40 | £95 |
- Per hour, fractional costs about the same as employing someone at my level. You just buy 2 days, not 5.
- The same budget full time gets you a hire on about £50k. More hours, but not the experience or the network.
- No holiday or sick pay, no notice, no redundancy. If you are VAT registered you reclaim the VAT, so £800 costs you £800.
Illustrative. Both hires assume 5% pension, a 20% recruitment fee over two years, 228 working days and an 8-hour day. Employer NI at 2026/27 rates. Your numbers will differ.

How the engagement runs
I work through my own limited company, WattsUp with Mark Limited, across several clients at once.
Engagements are built around outcomes and a monthly hours budget, not a timesheet, and are capped at 3 days a week.
Status determinations
Small clients, meaning two of: turnover up to £15m, balance sheet up to £7.5m, or 50 staff or fewer, do not need a status determination.
Medium and large clients issue a Status Determination Statement, and I supply the contract and working practices to support it.
How engagements are set up, not tax advice.
Typical roles: Chief Commercial Officer, Chief Growth Officer or COO. Commercial, Sales, Growth or Operations Director. Or Head of, if that fits your structure better.
Want the judgement and the network without the role? See Advisory and board support.
